GLI STUDI VICHIANI DI EUGENIO GARIN
61
EUGENIO GARIN’S VICO STUDIES I. This essay is the first part of a
study that investigates Eugenio Garin’s works regarding Vico and
European, Italian and Neapolitan culture, passing through various seasons
of Italian historical-philosophical debate. Vico was not particularly a
favourite ‘author’ of Garin’s, the latter being rather interested in the
thought of the former from an essentially methodological and ‘contextual-
ist’ point of view. Such an analysis allows a very close understanding of the
distance which divides the idea of philosophy and historiography that
Garin put into practice from the speculative and genealogical methods of
the neoidealistic historiography, from the related ambiguous conception of
the relationships linking philosophy and culture, and from every heavily
immanentistic interpretation of Vico.
