Physical Characteristics of the
Wildenstein Exemplar
As all the copies printed for distribution to particular individuals, the
Wildenstein Exemplar
is a single volume (of 260 x 200 mm., in
dodicesimo
) con-
taining two works, printed with wide external margins on a special paper that
assumed the copper color only in one printed page (both sides of pp. 19-20 of
De const.
) within the all volume and allowed no ink seepage when the author
made corrections or additions. The volume was bound in parchment. The spine
shows six raised bands; between the fifth and the sixth raised bands, the author’s
name and the abbreviated title has been lightly carved or pressed into the parch-
ment. At the top and bottom of the fifth and sixth raised bands within which the
title is found the printer made some ornaments using strings interlaced with the
fifth and sixth raised bands to create also two vertical sides bands that frame the
title from four sides. The title on the spine in Latin, on four successive lines, says
V
ICI
/
De
/
Universi
/
Juris
that is
The Universal Law
of Vico. Endpapers exist
in the front and the back of the volume. As the volume opens, there is the half
of the front endpaper, and the next page is the full title page in two colors, black
and red. The title page of the
De const.
has no line in red. Here is the title page
of

symbols ®, whose meaning I have changed to signify “in red”):
